I've had some trouble with using cardboard or corrugated board as terrain base plates, as any applied wet filler, paint, glue etc will make the board curve.

But maybe I found a solution:
Wood/white glue the board down first (or after) onto a piece of flat plastic and weigh down flat. This will set/lock the paper fibers, I guess. Then the terrain can be built, then peeled off the plastic. I actually did the reverse tho--build, then glue down. Seems to stay flat but I need to experiment more.

  • I think I figured out what my mystery offline windows updates were about.
    androidarts@mastodon.gamedev.placeA [email protected]

Maybe the remediation invisibly failed because Defender didn't have rights set. But now I had to give it rights or it would just say there was a mysterious threat (gave me an obtuse summary). So now it might actually be able to deal with the "threat" and undo my telemetry block, I guess. But maybe it needs a network for it (and hosts access?).

W10 and 11 flagging hosts telemetry blocking as a bigtime security threat is a thing which started a few years back according to a web search.

I think I figured out what my mystery offline windows updates were about.

A while back I added some telemetry blocks into the hosts file. W11 notifications are incredibly obtuse and are just like "There's a message. Ok I'm out!" and you're like what message? What did you want???

Anyways, I just discovered that Defender had found a "threat" (hosts) and tried to "remediate", and apparently presented this as a percentage style windows update during reboots... maybe? The timings sort of match.

Alright everyone, check out my two cool 12xD6 rolls (sorted):

    666666 33333 5

    444 33 222 1111

    Pretty cool huh? Very nice.

I think one would get bored before reaching 60. Even if you roll thousands of times you likely won't break 64 ( out of 72). Average is 42. All snakeyes is 1/2B I think.

(I found my twelve AT-43 dice)

And the realistic rebels would be like,

We need to firmly tell this Palpatine to stop with the abusive resort planets, water poisoning and storm troopers shooting people up.

    And Palpatine is like,
No, it's the lying rebels who are doing the bad planet thing and poison thing.

...please stop Palpatine or we're raising an angry sign.

I see the jobless rebels have nothing better to do than cause TOTAL CHAOS!

Jobless? I thought you said we were building 20 death stars.

    I never said that!

    Realistic Palpatine could go like,

I'm going to build... a grand... DEATH STAAAHR... that... will make the Empire STRONG.
Then he instead builds a bunch prostitution resort planets for imperial officers, and poisons random water supplies.

And the viewer is like, Huh--what about the death star plot?

    And Palpatine is like,
I NEVER said I was building a death staahr--it's the weaaak, weak rebels who are building... TWENTY death stars! Nooow... vote for my chansilor... chanceilelor resort budget.

It's easy to scoff about the use of bruteforce for-loops when it comes to calculating dice probabilities, but realistically when designing games you don't need super accurate results and you're also likely to have special rules that are harder to model than just 3D6, e.g., determine which dice type to roll with a D6 according to a table, but cap that at max 8, and reroll a 1, but not if you rolled a D20, because then the 1 counts as a rare 9.

  • It's interesting how the bicycle took on the modern shape pretty early (135 years ago), but the general idea of riding on two wheels was apparently counterintuitive historically.
    androidarts@mastodon.gamedev.placeA [email protected]

Early bicycle prototypes would probably not be all that energy efficient tho due to the lack of ball bearings and rubber wheels, and wood is actually kind of heavy. The Romans did know of ball bearings tho, because I think they were used in Nero's insane rotating building and a few other places. Steel was quite a ways off I guess. Ball bearings and chains would probably not last that long and just be very demanding to manufacture altogether. Nothing that a time traveller couldn't solve though.

It makes me wonder if the Romans could have made them. They had decent roads and a bicycle doesn't necessarily need modern material science. They're hugely energy efficient for transporting armies, and don't need food. If demonstrated well, that tech tree could have developed early. We might have had ancient bike-wars.

I like how these old Buck Rogers strips sometimes takes time to explain things, even kind of breaking fourth wall out of sheer excitement. It's not that common in storytelling, but as a concept artist I really quite like it.

  • Huh, so I've had my windows 11 wifi turned off for like 2 months (I barely use w11 and don't want update poo and disturbances every time I do boot it), and just now when I rebooted it, it suddenly applied an update.
    androidarts@mastodon.gamedev.placeA [email protected]

I got another W11 update delay on shutdown despite network being set to off, so I also turned off my router and the update didn't go through, making boot and reboot much faster. So I think it's circumventing the user setting. Might have to give W11 an incorrect wifi password (or change some auto connect setting).

These updates are too brief to be full updates... I'm not sure what W11 is doing but it's seemingly network related (haven't checked any logs).

    androidarts@mastodon.gamedev.placeA [email protected]

I've had 3 AAs in series driving a single red LED + 4K7 resistor for a long time. One of the batteries always go bad, perhaps due to mixed brands or nearby heat.

This time two batteries were fine at nearly full voltage, and the bad one reversed polarity to -0.4V which seems... unusual but is apparently a thing with alkaline batteries.

If you wiggle Samus left and right and pause you might catch a rare front pose mid-frame.

On the GBA SP the sprites are not scaled(?), but the tiles are, so Samus' feet will stick into the ground.

The way the SP lights the display (low front) creates a bunch of artefacts and highlights any dust trapped inside. Unlike CRT, old LED screens really aren't much to hang in the yule tree.

  • Made some razor wire segments for 6mm SM EPIC, following the official templates.
    androidarts@mastodon.gamedev.placeA [email protected]

Shooty armies that sit tight, like IG, probably benefits the most from the razor wire. It seems more like something one would use in a defense scenario though.

I also made a pool seen in the background. It's just warm blue paint going towards a mud colour in the shallows, then wood glue on top as it dries glossy and a bit bumpy.Varnish might not feel as soft. Perhaps some clear plastic could be used to give a deeper illusion of depth. Just paint the bottom of it and use as a base plate?

Made some razor wire segments for 6mm SM EPIC, following the official templates. The little X posts are made from carefully split matches. Matches can also be used make planks for e.g. trenches.

The mud-sand here is clay I distilled from the garden + brown water colour as a dye.

I don't have enough foam board to make the buildings. Fortifications have special rules and are bought as cards. Razor wire is 150pts for 2.5cm x 100cm (e.g. 8 segs) Units must Advance-order across (can't Charge).

@OrcRys No, it's the only one. I think an actual update would be huge for me at this point, so it's probably the reboot script doing cleanup and pretending it's an update. I may have turned the updates off too, but maybe top priority updates will get thru that.
