It has mismatched RAM modules (2+1 GB, factory afaik). I reseated them, then did a mem test from BIOS. Froze at 47%. No error though... the test really shouldn't crash, so it could still be the thermal paste / overheat as the fan was going during the test. Could run the test again to see if the % is different... but faulty RAM cells can be kinda random too.
This thing has service stickers everywhere. So un-mac'ey.

wrote last edited by [email protected]I upgraded it to 4+4 GB and put some "Thermal Grizzly" and new thermal pads on the chips. Still freezes.
RTC got right time.
Faulty battery? No, runs without one from AC and still freezes.
BIOS? Can't reflash since aborted flash->brick.
Dying power VRM thingy?
Fan is running pretty hard even in BIOS. Faulty heat sensor telling CPU to turn off? It's 68deg during memtest86+.
Hmm, no freeze in BIOS yet.
Freeze seems time-probability based, not temp based.

wrote last edited by [email protected]Alright, so I put it on a pack of ice cubes and kept moving the mouse.... managed to keep it running for 20 mins or so instead of 5.
So I thought it could be either the screen dimmer (which is BIOS controlled), or the temp.
But then it froze at like 95% install. So it's not the screen dimmer. Now running it on a larger ice pack... No, it still froze, faster this time.
I noticed 2 ICs (some BIOS RAM?) were not heatsinked but it might be pointless.
Will go outside tonight, boot in cold.
