Day 341 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing
-
Today's game is Ocarina of Time (my all time favorite Zelda game). Playing Mario Kart 64 yesterday had me in the mood to play this again. So i downloaded Ship of Harkinian and set it up along with a OoT 3D graphics mod that took longer to download than it should have. It looks really good. I have it upscaled to max resolution 60 FPS (my monitor isn't 120 FPS or else i would) and MSAA 8x. Runs smooth with no issues whatsoever outside of a bug with the Graphic mod. I usually try to crop screenshots with the HUD out so the people who like to guess the game can do so, but i ended up doing it for all of them. Something about the 4:3 crop i really like.
I talked about this last time i played this, but OoT has some of my favorite water. I keep a spreadsheet of Water in games, and OoT is at the top next to Super Mario 64 and Galaxy. Nintendo is just really good at making water i guess. By association now too, whenever i hear this song i always think of the word. Incidentally i had it playing while typing this too, really put me in the right mindset for this lol.
During the Ghoma fight, i made quick work of her by knocking her down with the slingshot. Hit her right in the eye and thwacked her. Whole fight was done in probably less than 30 seconds after the final cutscene.
Before she dropped down i managed to peek up and see her which was fun. I took the opportunity to nab a screenshot.
After that i booked it to castle town. I almost made it before nightfall but a certain owl had to stop me. Luckily SoH has a toggle to flip the usual dialog options, i kind of was tempted to leave them on though just for the experience. Unfortunately the owl kept me too long and it fell night. I ended up using the Stalkids though as target practice to get back into shape with the Z-Targeting.
I stopped after getting the Egg though. I could easily clear the first 3 dungeons in a whole day, but sadly i don't have a whole day. The fact the game crashed though wasn't a solid motivator either. I have an idea of how to fix it, but definitely a tomorrow project.
Very nice. I played it for a bit recently but I quit at the water temple, didn't intend to but it kinda made me. To no ones surprise I guess?

I also kept the 4:3 ratio, and the original resolution and framerate, too. The game was designed around this and it felt more right to me. But SoH‘s free camera is awesome of course, really freshened up the game.

Nice write up.
Must admit I'm kinda disappointed the screen shot of Kaepy G isn't one where the head is twisted nearly upside down.
But it also made me come in and read your thoughts on it. It's a comfy game to play. Good luck with the project.

Haha this is really interesting! What else is on the list? Have you played titles such as Sea of Thieves or Subnautica?
Was also going to recommend Sea of Thieves! The water is incredible in that game.

wrote last edited by [email protected]I don't know what's so impressive about the water, looks the same as water in every other 3D game from 1998?
I think Wave Race 64 had the best water on N64 iirc.
I also think MGS on PS1 had more impressive water.
Also Redline Racer on PC had quite impressive water for the time, but yeah, was PC, so not really a fair comparison

The first game that really wowed me with its water was Wave Race 64, so this tracks. I first noticed that home consoles were getting better graphics than arcades when I saw WaveRunner's water compared to Wave Race. It was really a "writing on the wall" moment for seeing the end of the arcade.

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I much prefer the original N64 models and textures over the 3DS.
Maybe it's just nostalgia but I feel like the 3DS graphics have aged much worse since it released.

Wow a spread sheet of water in games, impressive; that speaks of love for the medium. Do you only rank the best? Or do you also keep track of the worst intances of water in games?

i catalog it all on a Scale of 1-10 whenever i play a new game (w/ water ofc)

fair enough lol. i grew up on the 3DS one so it's probably nostalgia for me too, though i honestly i mostly prefer the graphics just because something about N64 Link's nose bothers me

idk, maybe it's just me being picky or some sort of placebo on my part. I just like the different ways it looks for the most part lol

I tried to get one of his head but i couldn't get the animation to time right outside of the dialog, and i'm kind of tough on myself about not using dialogs or preset camera angles for my screenshots

I swap back and forth between graphics, but freecam always goes on for me. It's so nice with modern controllers

Sea of Thieves is a yes, basically any game i play with water goes on it. Subnautica i have played but it was on a cheap laptop with a duo core CPU and 6 GB of RAM so... i didn't but it on there out of courtesy to give it a fair shot. I want to pick it up again on Steam though to give it a try. I'm not to invested in the lore though so i'm probably going to hold off until the sequel too buy it so i can play with friends

I first played the game on 3DS a long time ago, and god, i spent like 20 minutes going through the dialog trying to figure out why i couldn't escape. Somethings are just part of the experience i guess
