Was skimming the Universe (ttrpg) rules and what is this? Looks like the far extreme of making stats matter. Might've been preferable to have the GM roughly precalculate an away-team awareness value or have each type of creature resolve against some specific sense or variable to make them more unique. I prefer the fuzzy theater of mind over grids and hexes as ttrpg isn't crpg simulation but story telling. Before home computers many board games were seemingly designed with a sim mentality tho.

I always played ttrpgs in theater of mind mode, like:
"Your sensors pick up a moving heat signature in the difficult rocky terrain 50 paces ahead but you actually can't see anything clearly. Roll perception. Ah, when you look in the direction you see the mottled grey rocks move. Hum, biologist character Bob recognizes it as a camouflaged Hylian land squid."
