Manga General Discussion Thread - RIP MangaDex Edition [2025, Week 21]
-
Welp, it's been a good run, but it is seeming more and more likely that the age of MangaDex is over. With the wave of over 7000 takedown requests and policy changes requiring explicit rights or permission to upload, scanlators have largely stopped using the site.
So, what comes next? I don't know, but let's chat about it. Additionally, feel free to use this thread like you would any other weekly general thread by sharing about what you read this past week, asking for recommendations, or questions.
Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).
Decentralize. Ideally: federate, with redundancy.
If it's piracy then let's fucking act like it.

Ooof, my list is way shorter thankfully (only 47 titles left on MD) but that's mostly because I tend to limit the number of things I read at once. Heck, even with all the bookmarked series not in Mihon I'm nowhere near these numbers - past me's laziness in looking for new things finally paid off!
May I Ask for One Last Thing is in my top 10 (variable, lol) manga of all times, regardless of it being a villainess story.
She is a villainess for a few moments and from a specific point of view if you squint a bit. That's good enough for me!
No, no. Those are the ones I have on MD. I have almost double on other sources.

Professional reader, I see. Forgive me for underestimating your power your grace (シ_ _)シ

I'm surprised it existed at all. But I guess Japan now sees the international markets as worthy.

Serious: how would you federate something like mangadex?

Probably however Mastodon does it, but for more than four pictures at once.
What'd be great is if cross-site reblogs became independent. E.g. if someone posts on instance A and someone else references it on instance B, and the original post goes down on instance A, the copy on instance B is unaffected. And is possibly treated as original to instance B, if someone references the copy on instance A, and there's no working link to an original post on instance A.

Is that how it works? I thought content is only hosted on the original server, and each instance only shows a temporary copy at best.
If every instance is duplicating the content of every other instance, wouldn't they crumble under the hosting costs in... hours?

That is not how it works; it is what I would like.
And for a niche like exclusively hosting several dozen pages of translated comics at a time, every instance duplicating the whole database would not take that much space. Even if it's only a cache - one terabyte would go a looong way. Certainly long enough for anything popular to be recognized as missing and manually rehosted.
