[Announcement] The community and its future

The screenshots frustrated me too, because I've seen that done before where it's a daily screenshot and nothing else, feels low-effort and annoying and somehow spammy even if it's still on topic. Although my approach was to just scroll on, especially since it was just another spam post and not outrage-inducing. If it got truly bothersome I could always click the user and block.
Then I actually clicked one and saw the thoughts. They belong here. Wish there was a simple way for the poster to communicate to people like me, who got tired of seeing low-effort "screenshot a day" stuff and will make assumptions, that their posts are more than those and have actual words and effort with them.
@[email protected] needs to change the title to "Daily thoughts: game X, game Y, game Z." Continually saying "screenshot" each time is misleading and does legitimately sound spammy and annoying. A simple title change would be so much better.

Thanks for adding community links!
At least for me, they shove me over to lemmy.world. I suspect you may have clicked the autofill suggestion, which includes the instance in the link and thus forces all users who click onto your instance. If you don't do that and just write
!communityname@instancename
, it will let people click the link and go to the community on their instance, so they can interact instead of just browsing. I see you're from Emmy.world.[email protected] should let you see from lemmy.world and interact and comment and vote and the like. [email protected] (I clicked the autofill this time, it produced
[[email protected]](https://lemmy.zip/c/videogamesuggestions)
) will just toss you onto my instance, lemmy.zip.Will do
Edit : Actually the second link worked and sent me on LW.

Nice to see so much care and effort being put in here, Dremor!
I love the thought, and it makes me feel super happy to see this place getting some more focus. Having well and truly burned my bridges (and enjoyed watching the napalm) on my 'regular' social media, having this place as my focus on long-form posts just makes me happy. Makes me even more so to see making this place even better is your plan!
I'm happy to raise my hand to moderate, if you still need extra help. I'd guess not since Lemmy's workload on a modqueue is a small one. But do feel free to reach out to me via DM if you'd like suggestions/recommendations! Having moderated on Reddit (from giant 10m+ subs to the tiny community-focused ones) I've got plenty of ideas to encourage more community involvement?!
wrote on last edited by [email protected]Considering how much time and effort you put on your posts, I'm sure you'd make a good moderator. I'd sure need help in the future, as both moderator are temporary (unless they chose otherwhise), and as such I'd use all the help I can to moderate.
I'll DM you to discuss about the details.

If we're doing individual games, there are so many but off the top of my head [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], and I guess [email protected] even though that is mostly just reposts of other peoples' art of the characters and nothing else because in the end, it is a video game series.
I realize hitting all the game-related communities might expand the sidebar too much. Spoilers are also useful for condensing lots of content to one dropdown. If that is still too much, you could make a whole post that lists video game communities and link to it on the sidebar. I know I collected a big mega list way back when, not the genre one I linked below, but one full of basically everything I could find video-game related… that is probably full of dead communities now because I think I made this list around 2 years ago when Kbin was still a thing with my now-dead account. So everything might fit on one separate post for now. But I definitely think having a sort of directory for video game communities might be useful and helpful.
What about links for the top few, pastebin/similar list for the rest?

Will do

That's interesting! What are you on? I use Lemmy from the browser only.

I have actually thought about this! I’ve changed the name a couple times before. Usually I have people asking about it the name change though. I’m considering doing it after I reach a year, I might do it sooner though after seeing someone else now after seeing someone else say the same thing.

Lemmy-UI, directly on the browser. Works on Voyager too.
But I believe that LW has a couple of patches over the official release, that may be why.

Hi everyone.
It has been a while since last community update, as the old moderation team mostly vanished, and I was for a while the only moderator still active. A lot happened since then, and it is time to get the community back running at optimal pace.
New moderators
First, I'd like to welcome two new (temporary) moderator, that will help me moderating while we reform the community and examine permanent moderator applications.
- u/JonsJava : You may already know him as the moderator of [email protected], a video game focused community
- u/[email protected] (and its moderation alt, فكسومت مدمر العوالم, aka u/modfxomt)
If you wish to help moderate this community, feel free to PM me in order to candidate to be a moderator for this community.
Sidebar rewrite
I took some time to rewrite the sidebar to better reflect the community evolution.
I added two new section:
- "Authorized Regular Threads", which are allowed to be post on a regular basis as long as they respect the rules
- "Related communities", which contains links to other games related communities. Feel free to PM me to add more of them
I also added links to a git repo to each rule, which point to the current ruleset. Currently all of them points to the same root anchor, but in the near future, every rule will point to their specific section. This will allow to give a lot more detail, as well as examples, without polluting the sidebar.
Community contribution
As a community, I'd like to encourage users to participate in the community. We are not meant to be monolithic, like Reddit was, and we'd like to offer the community the way to better itself, according to its own rules, not some corporate greedy interest.
As such, I'd like to offer you all way to make it your own, with a more democratic approach to moderation. In the following weeks, I'll post multiple topics about it, from which we will collectively amend our rules to better fit its collectively defined purpose.
This will be done in multiple steps :
- First, we will open a discutions on current rules, in which we will be able to discuss about them, suggest improvements, and maybe create new rules
- The rules will be then internally rewritten in order to respect the community wish while still following LW rules
- The new rules will be individually put to vote. If the total is positive, the rule is adopted, if not, the rule will be bought back in a new discussions/amendment topic, until it reach consensus
Best regards,
u/Dremor
Edit 1 : I continued my work on the sidebar, feel free to give me your feedback on it.
wrote on last edited by [email protected]Thank you for your effort, and nice work on the sidebar!
I'd suggest [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] for inclusion as well.

I've seen that there are posts of game trailers polluting the posts feed on this community. Can some action be taken on that or have them moved to their own community?

Came to ask about this, too. Specifically, the user @[email protected] appears to be a bot, but isn't marked as one. They posted way too many trailer links today, and are not engaging in any of the conversations. Garbage reddit karma farm behavior, which doesn't even matter on this platform, what even is the point of doing this?
I have YouTube, as well. I can see the links to these trailers. I don't need them inundating the gaming feed, which causes me to miss actual conversations that pop up in here.

Are you high? I'm posting trailers to trailers that just launched, there have been massive shows the past few days, and I'm very active in the comments. How are you in the games community and don't know this?

Please stop bots from inundating the feed like @[email protected] does. I can block them, but it sucks for newcomers when they see 20+ bot posts and 1 human post on first glance.
I will become a moderator just to ban people that can't slow their roll and have to dominate the community in order to validate their existence, using this user as an example.

I'm not a bot

There were massive events the past few days and I'm posting trailers as they come. People are clearly interested in them and gives them a place to talk about these trailers

Have you tried not being an asshole? You're mad at me for posting game news in the game community?
-
Stop mentioning me

wrote on last edited by [email protected]There are multiple event right now, showing a lot of new games. So it was kinda expected. I'm considering new rules about that, should be part of the new rules proposed in the community overhaul.
In the meantime, I'll ask him to consolidate such event in a single megathread.
Edit: after a quick discussion with simple, he/she/they will consider a megathread for the next big event. The current posts will stay up.

Definitely fooled me, have you tried not acting like a bot? You drown out everyone else when you post incessantly like that. Maybe post just the event link they all come from and start a mega-thread, or write up some small detail on why you're sharing that trailer to kick off the conversation.
From my perspective, the trailers aren't news. They are low-effort link copy/paste and are all of really big games that are already in other feeds outside Lemmy. This place is supposed to be a place to have conversations about gaming, not a YouTube playlist for AAA pre-order hype.
Regardless, someone else in this thread expressed the same distaste for the seemingly endless trailers, and so I also am expressing my distaste for them. You mad at me for posting my opinion in a public forum?

Pinging me twice and calling me a garbage reddit karma farmer isn't "an opinion". Many people enjoy the trailers to catch up to events that happen a few days every year. Surely you can handle that without throwing a fit. Either way, I'm blocking you too so enjoy the one or two threads I overshadowed in the one hour the Xbox event was going on.

It's fine to not like their posts and how it's a good fraction of what is posted here, goodness knows I could do with less Game Company Does Bad Thing news, but that is an awfully nasty assumption of someone whose posts do generate discussion. Speaking as someone who does not click on most of their posts anymore.
