So what, then, is the primary draw to XR? In some ways it might be better to think of Mixed Reality as a ‘gateway drug’ to VR. We can say one thing fairly confidently here with respect to how consumers interact with current XR tech: true awe generally doesn’t come from spatial widgets, it comes from spatial experiences that draw users into whole new realities which play into deep areas of wish fulfillment. So while our future certainly includes MR based applications, XR’s true ‘killer app’ is spatially aware, adaptive, replacive reality.

In general if a technology is not comfortable to use people won't use it. Even if I'm into VR I don't use it as much as I would if it would be as easy as to put my regular glasses and VR is expensive to justify if you are a non-gamer honestly.

And I also think, at least in Europe, people is more concerned with privacy. I feel a bit bad of having a meta quest now, even if I think it's the best headset for its price, but meta is constantly abusing us with targeting sales to specific people only, now spying on android users, adding AI profiles to Instagram, etc. And the headset is the only thing I have from them.

Companies need to respect users a looot more if they want us to put those things more frequently honestly.

Having to put on a heavy headset to do VR is very much a limitation. Meta is just a garbage company so until more companies come into the market it is going to be slow going I am sure.

Lighter more comfortable headsets are coming.

Check out the Bigscreen Beyond for an example of the current lightest headset.

It has taken way longer than expected for headsets to get and stay light and comfortable. Including the Vision Pro. But the micro displays that just arrived on the scene a few years ago will help lead to the lighter headsets we need.

But now we have another problem. Those micro displays are super expensive. They are the single most expensive part of the Beyond and the Vision Pro.

VR hardware didn't advance fast enough. But it’s starting to round an important corner.
